ASL Print FX, a label manufacturer whose history dates back to 1965, has taken home to Canada the coveted Best of Show award at the 2017 TLMI Label Awards. The top entry in this year’s competition – Kavi Reserve – is a spirits label for a brand of whiskey and was entered into the Wine & Spirits – Flexography/Letterpress – Line & Screen/Tone – Prime category. Like the distinctive product the label identifies, this print job from ASL Print FX stands out in many ways with embossing, debossing, foil and fine details. It required a high level of printing excellence, setting itself apart from stiff competition.

The judges had their work cut out for them, evaluating nearly 200 entries from all over the globe in a wide range of categories. In addition to ASL Print FX, four other label companies received Best of Class recognition – Syracuse Label & Surround Printing, WS Packaging Group, Consolidated Label and Inland, who captured two Best of Class awards.

After four decades, TLMI’s Annual Awards continue to recognize the best technical skills and label printing know-how, providing a source of pride for all winners and the industry as a whole.

Best of Class – Flexo Wine & Spirits

ENTRY: Kavi Reserve

ASL Print FX Ltd.
DESCRIPTION/CHALLENGES: For this spirits label, the brand owner wanted to emphasize that the product was a coffee blended whiskey with a distinctive flavor. To do this, ASL Print FX used embossing techniques on nearly half the label and selected plastic film to help execute the heavy embossed and debossed design. Due to the high level of detail and tight registration required, extremely close attention was paid as the label was printed. An off-line Rhino foiling and embossing unit was used to achieve the required amount of detailed design.

DESCRIPTION/CHALLENGES: To complete the dual image back label, Syracuse Label had to print on two separate substrates and marry them together on its finishing equipment. It required multiple passes to complete.

DESCRIPTION/CHALLENGES: This shrink sleeve label was challenging to print due to it being a 9-color job. Because Arizona Beverage Company sells this flavored iced tea in many different packaging formats, it was extremely important to them that Inland was able to print this shrink sleeve label to match different types of packaging. To maintain strong brand awareness and equity, the job required consistency and the highest quality. High print registration and high line screen allowed for a detailed and complex color build. Overall, this label is visually and aesthetically appealing for this level of difficulty.

ENTRY: Reser’s Deviled Egg Potato Salad

Inland
DESCRIPTION/CHALLENGES: The Reser’s Deviled Egg Potato Salad ready-to-eat food container was challenging to print because it is a full coverage IML tub. Reser’s wanted their consumers to be able to see through the container for visibility of the food product. Because of this, Inland used a thinner, clear substrate, which presented a challenge. In order to successfully print this label so that the container could be molded, it was important that diecut tolerance was extremely tight. This high-quality label features sharp graphics of the images, which was achieved by ensuring that top-of-the-line color management while dry trapping the colors over a UV white ink maintained more than a 200 line screen value.
